Fence Design Tutorial

Overview

This tutorial will walk you through the fundamentals of fence design in Realtime Landscaping Pro.

Choosing a sample landscape

To begin, we will need to select a sample landscape that is ready for fencing. For this purpose, choose “Sample2.rlp”, which can be found by opening the “file” menu and selecting “open sample”.

Starting your fence design

Obtaining a proper view

The first step in any proper fence design using Realtime Landscaping Pro is to obtain a good view for accuracy when placing the fence. We can achieve this by clicking the “top-down” button that is located on the bottom of the screen. This will place your view directly over your landscape and allow you only top-down movement and zooming. Please also ensure that your snap grid is activated (the snap grid can be turned on by clicking the “toggle snap grid” button that is located on the left side of the screen).

Placing the fence points

The next, and most important, step in our fence design is to place the points for our fence. This step will make very good use of the snap grid and show the importance of the top-down view. To begin placing your first point, select the “fence” button that is located under the “building” tab. Now imagine the rectangular fence shape, and place your first point in the upper-right corner of that rectangle. Proceed to place points in each corner until you have a rectangular fence that encompasses the plants, the pond, and the house.

Switching to perspective view

To accurately view the color and texture of our fence, we will need to close in our view to the fencing. To view the fence design from the desired point, switch to perspective view. The perspective view is activated by clicking the “perspective view” button that is located near the bottom of the screen.

Zooming up to the fence

Now we will need to utilize the perspective view in order to obtain a close view of our fence. To change your view, hold down the right mouse button and move your mouse. To zoom, either hold down both mouse buttons and drag the mouse forward and backward or simply use the mouse wheel. Adjust your view until a portion of the fence becomes the dominant feature on your screen.

Changing the fence material

Now that we have the fence in view, we can make changes to the fence materials. To change the material, select your fence, and click the picture located next to the “Material” text that is located on the right of the screen. Clicking the picture will bring you to a selection of available fence materials, out of which you may select “wood10”. Once you select “wood10”, click “ok” and view your fence again.

Changing the fence style

The last change we must make to the appearance of our fence is the style. To change the style of the fence, click the picture next to the “style” text which is located to the right of the screen. Once in the fence style selection, click on “style2” and select “ok”. Now view the changed fence style.

Placing gates

Every fence needs a gate; ours needs two. We will need to place one gate in front of the garage door of the house, and another gate in front of the entry door. You can place the smaller gate (the entry door gate) by clicking the “Fence Gate” button located under the “building” tab. Once the gate button is selected, place the gate onto the fence in front of the main entry door of the house. Once the first gate is placed, put a second one in front of the garage door and increase the width of the gate to allow for car clearance. The gate width can be adjusted by dragging the slider that appears next to the “width” text that is near the right of the screen. The gates may optionally be opened by dragging the slider found next to the “open angle” text that also appears to the right.

Placing paths

For practical and aesthetic purposes, let us complete our landscape by placing a walkway from the fence gate to the main entry door of the house, and another walkway from the wider fence gate to the garage door. To place a path, select the “path” button found under the “landscape” tab. Place the first point at the entry door and continue placing points as you develop a path to the smaller fence gate. Repeat this process from the garage door to the wider gate.
