Patio Design Tutorial

Overview

This tutorial will walk you through the fundamentals of patio design in Realtime Landscaping Pro.

Loading a sample landscape

Our first step in our patio design is to load a sample landscape that requires the addition of a patio. For this purpose, please load “sample2” by selecting “open sample” which is found under the “file” menu. This landscape has a simple but elegant backyard landscape, but the house is in desperate need of an entry way patio.

House Design

Adding a patio

Now that we are in the position to create a patio, select the patio tool by clicking the “patio” button. With the patio tool selected, place your first point in the corner of the house between the door and the wall to the west of the door. Pace the second point against the opposite wall and proceed to create a rectangular patio that protrudes to the house’s southernmost point.

Adding an additional patio

Our next step to our patio design is to add an additional patio that will compliment the original one. Place the first point of this new patio on the south-east point of the original patio and the second point 15 ft (4.56m) to the west. Place the third point against the house directly north of the last point and continue placing points while bordering the house until you reach the original patio. Once you have reached the original patio, close the shape so that you get the visualization of one large patio.

Multiple Patio Design

Changing the patio material

We can now personalize our patios by changing their materials. The first step in changing the materials of the patio is to have both patios selected. To select both patios, hold the “shift” key and click on both. Once both patios are selected click the materials preview window which is found on the right side of the screen. Now that the materials selection is shown, click on “brick14”.

Deck Boards

Changing the patio height

The next part of our patio design brings us to further personalize our patios by raising the height of the second patio. Raise the height of the second patio to 1 foot, 3in (.39m) by editing the sliding bar found on the right part of the screen when the patio is selected. Now the second patio is accentuated and made distinct.

Raised Patio Design

Adding patio steps

Now we come to the point in our patio design where we require steps for a look of completion. To add steps, click the “patio stairs” button that is under the “building” tab. To modify the width of the steps, edit the “total width” bar that appears to the right of the screen when the steps are selected. Add steps to the southern edge of the second patio and modify the width of the stairs until they span the southern edge of the patio, then do the same to the southern edge of the first patio. Now add steps along the eastern side of the second patio so that the two patios may be more fluently merged.

Adding patio furniture

We are nearly done with our patio design, but we should add a patio bench for the sake of a completed visualization. To add a bench, open the furniture menu under the accessories selection and select “bench2”. The accessories selection can be found by clicking the “accessory” button under the “landscape” tab. Once the bench is selected, place it on the patio. Now we must rotate the bench. To rotate, press the “r” key and click on the bench. Hold the mouse button down while moving the mouse until the bench is rotated ninety degrees. When the bench is properly rotated, place it against the wall to the east of the door.
